To update the system:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

apt update refreshes the package lists, and apt upgrade pulls in the newer versions. Run them in that order.

How does the desktop update?

The desktop, the servers and the Nexus kernel modules are packages too, so fixes between releases arrive with apt upgrade.
